The Ultimate Easter Egg: How Faberge's Influence is Still Seen Today
- 31 Mar 2021
The Imperial Eggs, originally commissioned by Russian royalty and created by jeweller Peter Carl Faberge, are a legendary collection of fine jewellery pieces.
To this day, these pieces are some of the most magnificent ornaments ever made and have become almost mythical in reputation. In our bespoke collections here at Chisholm Hunter, you can see the influence from Faberge, particularly our 1857 Collection. In this range we have set diamonds into ornate and unique shapes, similarly to how Faberge and his artisans did in the Imperial Egg designs.
The first of Faberge's Imperial Egg designs was presented as an Easter gift in 1885, from Emperor Alexander III to his wife Empress Maria Feodorovna. The egg was said to have contained inside an extraordinarily valuable ruby pendant. The gift went down so well that Alexander III commissioned a further 9 eggs until the end of his reign in 1893. Keen to continue in his father's footsteps, his son, Nicholas II commissioned a further 40 eggs until the end of his rule in the revolution of 1917.
Each egg is beautifullyfinished in enamel and adornedwith all kinds of precious stones and gems, ranging fromdiamonds, rubies, pearls, and emeralds to name but a few.The exquisite detail and ornate design of the eggs were incredibly influential for decades to come.
