Burns Night: A time to celebrate Scottish heritage
- 25 Jan 2021
Burns night is an annual holiday which celebrates one of Scotland's greatest ever creative minds, the lyricist and national poet of Scotland: Robert Burns. Originally held at Burns Cottage on July 21st, 1801 by close friends of his, Burns Night has since been an annual occurrence ever since. Now held on the 25th of January, Burns Night is a celebration amongst Scots all over the world; traditionally serving haggis and a dram of whisky.
Raised by tenant farmers, Burns grew up in poverty and deprivation. The gruelling manual labour that comes with farming had long lasting effects on Burns. Much of his education came from his father, who himself was a self-educated man. During the harvest of 1774, Burns was inspired by his assistant Nelly Kilpatrick to attempt poetry. The resulting poem was O, Once I Lov'd A Bonnie Lass, but it was only in 1782 that he was convinced to become a poet, thanks to some persuasion from his friend, Captain Richard Brown. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Burns Night is a time to come together with your family to celebrate the life and works of an extraordinary artist and what it means to be Scottish, but also to celebrate national pride. Burns represented (and still represents) what Scotland can bring to the world: excellence and great passion.
