Hamilton x Far Cry 6 | Khaki Field Limited Edition
- 11 Nov 2021
If you are a movie fan you will most likely be familiar with Swiss watch brand Hamilton. Featured in blockbuster hits such as Men in Black, Interstellar and Ocean's 8, Hamilton have some pretty incredible collaborations under their belt so far! In the brand's first ever video game collaboration, Hamilton launched the limited edition Khaki Field Far Cry 6, which makes an appearance in the sixth instalment of the Far Cry game series. While the games have featured watches in the past, this is the first one that fans of the game can actually buy and wear for themselves - an exciting prospect for gaming fans everywhere.
Far Cry 6 | Plot
For those who haven't heard of Far Cry 6, let's break it down a little shall we? In the action-adventure first-person shooter game, we follow guerrilla fighter Dani Rojas as they attempt to topple the dictatorship of "El Presidente", Castillo, set on the fictional Caribbean island of Yara. Players take on armies and other antagonists throughout the game with the aim to free Yara from Castillo's rule.
You can find the Hamilton Khaki Field watch on the wrist of main character Dani in the game, and the watch has more functionality in the game than a just a good looking timepiece. In a statement from Hamilton,
Successful players unlock access to the in-game timepiece that's equipped with a unique and original keeps on ticking function. The defensive wrist gear improves general defence during sprints, allows players to get in and out of danger quickly and efficiently, and will be a useful benefit for gamers as they fight for Yara's freedom.
The Watch
Let's take a closer look at the watch. The Hamilton Khaki Field has been made with the game function in mind. From materials to size, this watch has been so well executed with lots of little details that are subtle nods to the game itself. Rugged and resilient, this watch feels exactly how it should for the first person shooter game.
In terms of materials, the watch case is made from brushed Titanium, a matte metal. Typically watches that use Titanium are polished to give a luxury shine, but the brushed metal of this piece is specifically chosen so that when wearing, you remain subtle and discreet. Polished surfaces tend to glint in the light and draw attention, which is something you don't want to do when trying to topple a dictator.
The Hamilton Khaki Field comes in at a rather large 42mm in diameter and is 11.45mm thick. To compare, the classic Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical comes in at 38mm in diameter. The size jump does feel quite significant, however we feel that the large size suits the collaboration with Far Cry 6. The watch feels big, bold and daring, just like the game.
The Dial
The physical size of the watch may be bigger, but the dial size also feels bigger than average. With a lack of bezel, this is a smart way to give more dial space and makes the Hamilton Khaki Field Far Cry 6 limited edition look quite unique compared to many other timepieces on the market at the moment.
Promotional images for the Far Cry 6 game feature a colour palette of red and orange tones primarily and this is reflected on the dial of the watch. With the pale orange/nude numerals and the bold red seconds hand against the black background, this makes for a particularly striking watch face. One of the hidden unique features of this watch that makes it so special, is the number 6 on the watch dial. It has a slash through it which mimics the Far Cry 6 logo. There is only a limited run on this watch too, with only 1983 pieces created. This is another nod to the game, as Far Cry fans will know, as 1983 is a key year in the games' plot
The Movement
Time to get into the specifics of this timepiece. This Khaki Field is powered by the Hamilton H10 movement which can be seen in all its glory through the open case back of this watch. This is a feature that is more commonly found on luxury watches at a higher price point, so to have the exhibition case back on this £1000 timepiece is impressive and a great feature. The watch also has an 80 hour power reserve and is water resistant up to 100m.
Overall we think that this collaboration has worked incredibly well and has opened the doors for future collaborations with watch brands in gaming. It's bringing a piece of a virtual reality into people's real lives and creating a connection, something that can spark conversation with mutual interest if you see someone wearing it. Not only a great looking timepiece, but a lot of character packed in too.
