Jewellery Care Guide

Your jewellery goes through a lot during day-to-day wear, especially pieces worn on your hands such as rings and bangles. Over time jewellery can get worn, scratched and dented and dirt can build up causing the jewellery to appear slightly dull and lifeless. The Chisholm Hunter Jewellery Workshop can bring your precious jewellery back to life. Our skilled jewellers will examine your jewellery with care and compassion, recommending what work is required to ensure your jewellery is repaired to its full glory.

To prolong the life of your jewellery, it is important to get each piece checked annually by our knowledgeable sales professionals in one of our Chisholm Hunter stores. They will advise if your item requires and further work and will arrange to send your jewellery to the Chisholm Hunter Workshop where we will assess and repair the item. If you are unable to get to one of our stores, you send your repair direct to our service centre.

At the Chisholm Hunter Jewellery Workshop we offer a variety of services:

Cleaning, Polishing and Rhodium Plating

In the workshop, we can bring your precious jewellery back to life with a thorough clean and polish. We use our ultrasonic cleaner and our steam cleaner to remove and traces of dirt and build up from your jewellery. We will then remove marks and surface scratches using fine emery paper followed by a full polish. White gold, which naturally has a yellowish tinge, requires rhodium plating to give it that beautiful bright white finish. This plating can get worn down with wear and requires recoating every 6 – 12 months, however this timescale is dependent on the wearer. Our workshop can reapply this rhodium plating for you to give your white gold jewellery that extra sparkle.

Ring Sizing

If your ring is feeling slightly too tight or loose, our workshop can resize your ring to fit more comfortably. Please visit one of our Chisholm Hunter stores where the knowledgeable sales professionals will measure your correct finger size and send your ring to the workshop to be sized. We offer ring sizing to Silver, Gold, Platinum and Palladium rings.

Chain & Earring Repairs

Over time and wear you might find that your chains and earrings need a little TLC, whether this is to repair a snapped chain or replace a broken clasp or earring back. We offer replacement parts for a wide range of jewellery. We are also able to repair broken chains, earrings, bangles and bracelets by either soldering or using our laser welder. After the repair has been cleaned and polished your jewellery will look as good as new!

Half or Full Shank Replacement

After years of wear the band on your ring may become thin and worn down which could cause it to snap or break more easily. Here at our workshop, we can strengthen the band of your ring by adding a new half or full shank. We would remove the old worn metal and replace this with a thicker, more substantial piece of metal making your ring more secure and giving it an extended life.

Retipping/Repairing Claws

Sparkling stone set jewellery is one of our specialities here a Chisholm Hunter, but to prolong the life of your stone set jewellery and keep the stones secure, it is necessary to get the claws checked regularly. The claws on a stone set ring are what holds the beautiful stones securely in place. Over time the metal claws can wear down and become thin or even wear away completely. When this happens, your stone is a risk of becoming loose or falling out. To protect against this, we would recommend a retip on any worn or damaged claws. This involves renewing the claws and securing the stones to ensure they are safe giving your piece of jewellery an extended life.

Stone Tightening or Replacement

Occasionally stones in your jewellery can loosen through general wear or your jewellery taking a knock or bump – this is likely to happen more often with rings. To maintain your jewellery and prolong its life, we recommend having your jewellery checked annually by our instore sales professionals. They will check each stone in your item is secure and tight. If a loose stone is not tightened, there is a risk of it falling out and being lost. Our workshop are able to replace missing stones, matching them to the colour, cut and clarity of the original or surrounding stones.

We can also restring other beaded jewellery.

Engraving

Jewellery often represents a special moment in your life and can be extremely personal to each wearer. If you are giving a piece of jewellery as a gift or you just want to personalise something for yourself, you can get your jewellery engraved with a sentimental message or date.
