September's Birthstone: Sapphire
- 8 Sep 2021
What is a Sapphire?
A sapphire is a precious gem and the traditional birthstone for September. A member of the corundum family, a sapphire is typically blue in colour but can also be found in yellow, purple, orange, pink, and green tones.
A ruby gemstone is also part of the same corundum family; both sapphire and ruby feature the same chemical composition and mineral structure, the only difference is the trace impurities which determine the stones colour.
Cultural History and Spiritual Properties of Sapphire
Throughout history, sapphires have been at the centre of many superstitions, such as revealing the secrets of oracles, influencing spirits, and making peace between nemeses. In modern spirituality, sapphire is claimed to promote serenity and peace of mind, restore balance within the body and align physical, mental, and spiritual planes.
For hundreds of years, the sapphire has been linked to royalty and romance. In the ancient empires of Greece and Rome, many believed that blue sapphires protected them from envy and harm.
Perhaps the best example of a sapphire being intertwined with both royalty and romance came in 1981, when Prince Charles proposed to Lady Diana Spencer with a spectacular blue sapphire engagement ring, which was then passed to Kate Middleton when Prince William proposed to her in 2010.
Sapphires are a huge hit with modern celebrities also and can be seen at red carpet events all around the world. Beyonc famously has a blue sapphire engagement ring, and actress Reese Witherspoon can also be seen wearing sapphire jewellery for events.
