We are always on the look out for the best on the market, and we have to say, this is one of the best, most detailed diving watches we have came across, and for the price of £720, there's no wonder why we can't stop talking about this Certina watch.
Now we don't like to just tell you how good a watch is, no, we like to show you. Taken on an adventure in Scotland, the Certina DS Action Diver stood up to our expectations. So let's take a look shall we?
The Setting
Fans of MARVEL movies will know this small fisherman's village as New Asgard, but we know it better as St Abbs, which is north of Eyemouth on the Berwickshire Coast. Known as the prime spot for Puffin watching and scenic coastal walks, this is the perfect place to explore, take in the views and show off this stunning diving piece.
What Should We Look For in a Diving Watch
All watches tend to serve a specific purpose, whether a Field Watch, Pilots Watch or a Dress Watch, each has been created with a specific function in mind. There are many things that you should be looking at when buying a diving watch.
With the primary purpose of being used underwater, it is a given that the Water Resistance on a dive watch should be pretty good. Another thing to consider is the material of the watch, and in particular the strap. While a rubber strap is functional in terms of comfort and strength, it can become brittle over time and cut. That's why stainless steel and titanium are the ideal material to use in a diving watch as they won't rust and are still strong. Another thing to be looking for is an adjustable strap, as you want to be able to wear your watch over any gear or wetsuits. Clarity and readability are also major factors to consider as when diving in dim lighting, you need to be able to read the time, so luminescent markings with bold styles and contrasting colours all help with this.
Let's dive into these consideration factors a little and see how the Certina DS Action Diver measures up.
Water Resistance
The water resistance of this DS Action Diver is an impressive 300m. To put this into perspective, some luxury diving watches that can retail for two or three times the price of this Certina piece can sometimes come with only 100m or 200m water resistance, so you are definitely getting the value in this piece.
Materials
Now we all know that the materials of the watch are important, not only of comfort, but also function like we mentioned above. Made from 316L Stainless Steel, this watch is ideal for diving but also for wearing out and about everyday. Stainless steel can feel a little more heavy than titanium, but at 38mm diameter, 19mm lug to lug and 12.20mm overall thickness, this watch is not too big, meaning that it doesn't feel too heavy to wear.
This watch also comes with a divers clasp extension for the bracelet which allows the strap to extend over wetsuits and gear, so we would say that the Certina DS Action Diver checks the box of being adjustable, a huge plus!
The Dial
The dial is the showstopper part of the watch, where all the important detail is displayed. The Certina DS Action Diver is a certainly a good looking watch, with deep blue dial and gold detailing, it is a more bright and colourful approach to a diving watch, and gives a more modern feel to the style. As we mentioned above, the watch has to be readable in the dark depth of the ocean, so having Super-LumiNova on the face and hands is a major advantage of this timepiece.
Covering the dial of this Certina piece is sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective coating on one side, meaning you can read the watch well, even under the glare of bright light. This makes such a difference to the the watch and is a feature that even some luxury watches don't have. There is no cyclops eye to magnify the date window on this timepiece but we do prefer it this way. It is clean and minimal and just adds to the overall aesthetic of the piece.
Around the outside of the dial is a unidirectional rotating bezel, this allows the divers to keep track of how long they have been under the water and also their oxygen time. At the centre of this timepiece is the Certina Powermatic 80 movement, which has a power reserve of an amazing 80 hours!
Our Overall Opinion
The Certina DS Action Diver ticks all the boxes for us. It is a really good looking piece with the deep blue, gold and silver colour scheme, the dial is bold and modern with the detailing but isn't too crowded and is easy to read. The water resistance and power reserve make this a totally functional diving watch, as well as a beautiful piece for everyday wear. And for £720, it's an absolute steal for this quality!
