November Birthstone - Yellow Topaz & Citrine?
If you are born in November then you are really lucky, you get two official birthstones, Yellow Topaz (known as Imperial Topaz) and Citrine.
But why are there two birthstones for November?
The traditional birthstone for November was a Yellow Topaz, however this stone became increasingly rare as time went by and harder to source, so in the early 1910s the Citrine became an official November birthstone. The colour palette for November birthstones is completely perfect for golden crisp autumn days with warm orangey coloured topaz and rich citrine yellows.
What is Topaz?
Topaz is a beautiful clear stone that comes in many shades of blue and pink, as well as the golden orange tones of the November birthstone, Yellow Topaz. The name Topaz comes from the Sanskint language and means fire.
Cultural History and Spiritual Properties of Topaz?
There are many beliefs and symbols that the yellow topaz holds such as the topaz bringing strength, empathy and serenity to the owner. Ancient Egyptians believed that the topaz was the stone of the sun god, Ra, and those that received a topaz were blessed with his protection and favour.
Topaz is thought to be symbolic of the outdoors and natural roots, stability and the comfort of home due to its warm colour, the perfect symbol of cosy late Autumn days.
What is Citrine?
Amber-infused Citrine is a beautiful pale orange/yellow coloured gemstone, most commonly found in Bolovia and the modern November Birthstone. The Citrine inherits its name from the French word Citron, meaning lemon due to its yellow colour. The November birthstone has been used for thousands of years in jewellery, armour, interiors and furniture.
Cultural History and Spiritual Properties of Citrine
A stone of abundance and happiness, the citrine has many spiritual meanings and a rich history. It is thought that Citrine inspires creativity and awakens the imagination, while the warm yellow colour symbolises the sun vitality of life. Some say that the stone has healing powers to ignite energy in your body to detoxify and bring balance.
The stone of the sun has been popular throughout history. In the 17th Century the Scottish would use Citrine in the handles of their daggers. It grew further in popularity in the 19th century due to Queen Victoria's love of colourful gemstones being used in her jewellery. It even became known as the stone of the rich and famous at this time. The most popular era for the Citrine would have to be the Art Deco era where November's birthstone could be seen in not just jewellery, but clothes, interior design and furniture.
Celebrity Style
Citrine is a favourite with celebrities and royalty and can be seen on red carpet events. Stars such as singer, Adele, and actress, Vanessa Hudgens, have been seen wearing citrine jewellery, as well as Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge. The yellow/orange tones of citrine makes it a versatile stone to pair with muted autumnal colours or bright summer colours alike.
Care & Cleaning for Citrine Jewellery
The Cirtrine is perfect for everyday wear due to the durability of the stone. An Ultrasonic cleaning machine can be used, or the alternative would be soapy water and a cloth.
